Digital Marketing

Just like in any career-driven industry, you might wonder what advice, insights or knowledge professionals would give to newcomers. We all inspire and influence each other and learning from experts is essential for career growth and adaptability.

Marketing is often misunderstood, which can discourage people from pursuing a career in it. If you believe in your potential yet have doubts or no experience, this article is for you!

The future of marketing is rapidly evolving driven by technological advances, consumer behavior and an increasing digital world. Marketers must always be prepared for adaptation, innovation and embracing new strategies. In this article, you will learn from our team on what key trends, tools and techniques that have shaped their experience in marketing and how it can also help marketers of the future.

Asking the Team: What Is One Piece Of Advice You Would Give To Marketers Starting Their Careers Today?

Ellen Merryweather, Organic Marketing Lead

The best advice I have is for stakeholder management…beware of the phrase ‘marketing magic.’ You’ll hear this from stakeholders who don’t understand how much work goes into what we do. “I’ve sent you this document so you can work your marketing magic, shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours.” And then you discover that they want it rewritten, proofread, translated, turned into a PDF, and launched with its own landing page! Always get the details of what’s being asked for before you agree to a deadline.

Regular training is necessary. Today, as we mentioned earlier, everything moves quickly and changes rapidly, largely due to the growing use of technology in every aspect of life. It's vital to stay aware of what's happening around you: new business models, new growth strategies, new channels, tools...it's all about staying up to date.

Digital marketing changes fast, so find reliable sources! The best way to find best practices is through industry experts who breathe and live each update, where they test and share feedback. An example of this is where we implemented one of Bram’s hacks and so far we have been collecting results!

Marketing now is becoming more technical, by gaining tech skills you will be able to understand what you are doing better, and best of all automate some boring tasks! Taking a data driven approach is always the best where you will be able to design your strategy and monitor it from beginning to end. Your intuition matters but confirming a hypothesis with numbers is considerably better.

I believe that marketing professionals need to be multi-skilled, and one of the reasons I love doing what I do is that I need access to skills from completely different backgrounds.

My key advice for new marketers is to develop a deep understanding of your audience. In today’s fast-paced and data-rich environment, knowing your users’ pain points, desires, and motivations is crucial. These insights form the foundation of any successful marketing strategy. However, it’s not enough to just gather data—you need to know how to interpret it. Use tools like surveys, customer interviews, and social listening platforms to get a holistic view of your audience, but always validate your assumptions through A/B testing and real-world performance analysis.

Beyond understanding your users, it’s essential to stay agile. The marketing landscape is constantly evolving, with new platforms, technologies, and consumer behaviors emerging regularly. What works today might not work tomorrow. As a marketer, you must adopt a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation. Always ask questions, challenge assumptions, and be prepared to pivot your strategy when necessary. Success in marketing comes from not only having creative ideas, but also being able to back them up with data-driven decisions. The more you can understand the nuances of both your audience and the changing market, the more impactful your strategies will be.

Most of the companies rely on the data for their decisions and their strategies so I would encourage all marketers that are starting their careers to be sure that they understand the most important KPIs and the connection between them. I would also encourage them to take a data analytics course because being able to collect data and analyze it by yourself gives you tons of freedom!

Thinking of becoming a marketer or still unsure if it's your vibe? My advice: skip the fancy degrees that take years to complete. Take that from someone who decided to take the long and expensive route...if only I could go back in time. Start small with free online courses, see if it lights a spark, then dive into a short marketing course to get the fundamentals. After that, get your hands dirty with internships or pro bono work to build up your chops.

The field of marketing is incredibly broad and we’re sure you can find the right position for you and your experience. There are endless possibilities allowing you to pick and choose what suits you, aligning with your skills and interests.
