What are the Most In-Demand Tech Jobs in Germany?

With Germany’s status as a leader in the global tech industry has come a thriving tech job market. There were 149,000 open positions in the German IT industry in 2023, an increase of about 12,000 from the previous year

Anyone looking to change careers or upskill in the tech industry might wonder where the most promising opportunities are. There are many in-demand tech jobs in Germany and understanding the current state of the German tech job market will help you navigate this period of change and make informed decisions about what to study.

In this blog, we'll dive into the tech jobs that are standing out in Germany and highlight roles where demand is high so you can develop the skills needed to land the job of your dreams.

In-Demand Tech Jobs in Germany: A Comprehensive List

When we discuss in-demand jobs, we’re talking about tech roles that are experiencing significant growth and have a shortage of qualified candidates. Within Germany, there are quite a few roles that are currently experiencing this trend:

1. Data science and analytics

The explosion in the volume of data businesses collect in recent years has brought with it a new era of opportunities and challenges. Our State of Tech 2024 report projects a significant 22.5% increase in daily data creation by the end of 2024. This data is incredibly valuable for businesses that have the right talent on their teams to mine, analyze, and leverage this information to improve products and services and predict trends.

In Germany, the demand for data scientists and analysts is surging as the volume of data that businesses manage rises. The German Economic Institute (IW) found that between 2019 and 2023, one out of every five job postings required new employees to have data skills, highlighting the importance of managing data for aspiring job seekers in Germany.

At the heart of data science and analytics are Data Scientists and Data Analysts:

  • Data Scientists dive deep into data, using advanced modeling techniques, machine learning, and predictive analytics to uncover valuable bits of data from a vast sea of information.

  • Data Analysts focus on what happens afterwards. They are normally the ones interpreting data, analyzing datasets, and producing actionable insights that drive decision-making.

For anyone starting out in the field, an entry-level position would typically be a Junior Data Analyst or a Data Technician. In these roles, you'll typically assist with data collection, cleaning, and preliminary analysis under the guidance of more experienced colleagues. These positions will help you solidify your understanding of data handling and analytics and prepare you for more advanced roles in the future.

2. UX/UI design

UX/UI design is all about shaping interactions between customers and businesses. Our State of Tech 2024 report found that a whopping 74% of businesses note the importance of UX in bolstering sales because it has a direct influence on user experience, engagement, and satisfaction.

As digital products become more sophisticated, the role of UX/UI designers is growing more complex. As a UX/UI designer, you are now not only focused on the aesthetics of design but also the functionality and ease of use of any digital products or services such as websites, mobile apps, or complex software systems.

For those aspiring designers, entry-level positions like Junior UX Designer or UI Designer offer a gateway into the field. These roles can give you experiences in design thinking, user research, and interface design, setting you up for more advanced opportunities in strategic design and user experience leadership.

3. Cybersecurity

Are cybersecurity jobs in demand? Absolutely. In today's digital-first world, the security of data and systems is paramount for businesses. The State of Tech 2024 report found that 70% of German companies suffered from a successful cyberattack in 2022, highlighting the urgent need for skilled cybersecurity professionals to keep companies' digital assets safe. This demand is not limited to large corporations; small and medium-sized enterprises are equally at risk and in need of protection.

The field of cybersecurity is rapidly changing, with new threats and challenges emerging almost daily. People working in this sector must stay ahead of trends such as AI security solutions, the adoption of zero-trust architectures, and the impact of new legislation on data protection and privacy. Cybersecurity roles range from ethical hackers, who test systems for vulnerabilities, to security analysts, who monitor and respond to threats, and compliance officers, who ensure that businesses adhere to data protection laws and regulations.

Entry-level positions in this field, such as Junior Security Analyst or IT Security Technician, offer a starting point for those interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. These roles typically involve assisting in the development and implementation of security measures, conducting basic risk assessments, and responding to security breaches.

4. AI and machine learning

AI and ML roles are growing in importance in businesses across a range of fields. Tech workers who have these skills are helping businesses develop algorithms and models that can learn from and make predictions or decisions based on data. These algorithms are then used to enhance efficiency, fuel innovation, and create new services and products that were previously impossible due to the amount of resources they would take to develop.

AI Specialists and Machine Learning Engineers are at the heart of the growing AI sector. They typically work with these technologies to do things such as automating routine tasks or creating AI systems that can mimic human behavior or improve decision-making processes.

Entry-level positions such as AI Research Analyst or Junior Machine Learning Engineer provide a foundation for a career in this field. These roles often involve assisting in the development and implementation of AI models, analyzing their performance, and working under the guidance of experienced colleagues to improve AI systems.

Given the pace at which AI and ML are evolving, anyone wanting to enter this field must be ready to continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies. The demand for skilled AI and ML specialists is expected to grow massively in the coming years, highlighting the important role these technologies will play in the future of the tech industry.

5. Robotics and automation

Robotics and automation have become integral to the modern industrial landscape. Germany's principal industries include machine building, automobiles, and electrical engineering which have grown to rely on robotics and automation. This has fueled remarkable growth in the robotics sector, nearly doubling its turnover from 2010 to 2019

Germany boasts an impressive number of industrial robots, with 415 robots per 10,000 employees, ranking third globally. With so many robots, there is now a high demand for professionals skilled in designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining these robotic systems. Companies like KUKA, Siemens, and Bosch Rexroth are at the forefront of this revolution, offering exciting career opportunities for Robotics Engineers, Automation Technicians, and Control Systems Engineers.

For those entering the field, positions such as Junior Robotics Technician or Automation Support Specialist offer a stepping stone into the industry. These roles typically involve supporting the design, operation, and maintenance of robotic systems and automated processes, providing a practical understanding of these technologies.
